Pensations is located in beautiful and historic Danville, Kentucky. Danville is located in central Kentucky, in the heart of the Bluegrass region. Danville offers a wealth of historical, educational and cultural institutions and activities. Danville has a strong place in the history of Kentucky and the United States. Danville, Kentucky, is known as "the City of Firsts." Danville was the site of the first post office west of the Alleghenies, and of the first courthouse in Kentucky. It was the site of the meetings which led to the founding of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, and Kentucky's first constitution was written in Danville. (Constitution Square State Historic Site commemorates the early days of Kentucky.) Isaac Shelby, Kentucky's first governor, lived in Danville. Ephraim McDowell performed the world's first successful abdominal surgery (removal of an ovarian tumor) in his surgery in Danville. Kentucky School for the Deaf was the first state-supported school for persons with disabilities not only in the US, but also the first in the western hemisphere. Centre College in Danville was the first college west of the Alleghenies. (Centre was also the location for the 2000 national vice presidential debate.) Each year Danville and Centre College host the Great American Brass Band Festival in June. (One of the highlights of the festival is the hot air balloon race held on Friday evening -- spectators are allowed on the field with the balloons. Click here for a photo.) The local newspaper (the Advocate Messenger) sponsors the town's band -- the Advocate Brass Band. In addition to playing in the Brass band Festival each year, the Advocate Brass Band regularly has concerts at the band stand in the park next to the courthouse. Danville is home to the Pioneer Playhouse, Kentucky's oldest outdoor theatre (founded in 1950). Danville was the first town in Kentucky to receive a Great American Main Street Award from the National Trust for Historic Preservation (one of five awards given nationally in 2001). Click here to read the press release from the National Trust. Central Kentucky is not only historically rich -- it also abounds in natural beauty and supports a variety of outdoor activities. Kentucky's waterways are particularly popular, and Lake Herrington is only minutes from Danville. If Danville doesn't have enough to keep you occupied then you can visit many other interesting sites nearby, including the Perryville Battlefield State Historic Site (with its Civil War battle re-enactment), Elmwood Inn, Shakertown, Harrodsburg and Fort Harrod, Stanford, and Camp Nelson. |
